Hi! I’m Melissa, currently a student at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) working towards my Master’s degree in Rehabilitation and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I received my Bachelor’s in Psychology at the University of Virginia, and upon receiving my Master’s, I plan to pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
Between my time in undergrad and VCU, I worked for a bit in media, mostly writing and storytelling. Coming from that background, I believe that everyone has a unique, nuanced story built from lived experiences and their hopes for where they want to go next. My goal as a counselor is to be an empathetic, curious partner in exploring that story with you, and to support you as you grow towards the person you want to be. I have an unwavering belief in the human potential for change and a deep respect for your journey.
I’m passionate about working with adults and young adults navigating through life changes, relationships, identity and self-esteem, and trauma. I have special interest in Asian American and multicultural populations navigating culture and identity in today’s world. My approach draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and compassion-focused therapy, with an overall commitment to being person-centered, trauma-informed, and strengths-based. Together, I hope we’ll create a safe, comfy space for you to be seen and find understanding.
In my free time, I’m probably reading and writing, watching a movie, exploring my neighborhood, or going on really long runs.
