Clinical Mental Health Intern - Student

Intern

Hello! My name is James Danielson (He/They), and I am currently in my second and final year of working toward a Master’s in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from VCU. Before this program, I obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from VCU. My hope is to one day obtain LPC licensure, and perhaps pursue further education as mental health is a subject I am extremely passionate about.

During my time as a student, I’ve been fortunate enough to have had many opportunities to work with and be a part of the healing and recovery of others. I have served as a volunteer crisis counselor with the National Crisis Textline, led informational workshops about and facilitated support groups for individuals who have experienced abusive or unhealthy relationships, and worked at a local preschool as an in-class aide for children with Autism. These experiences have culminated in an approach that is trauma-informed, sensitive to neurodiversity, and that takes a holistic and strengths-based view. While all of these endeavors have taught me valuable lessons and further spurred my passion for counseling, supporting and helping those who have experienced interpersonal or relational traumas remains my primary motivation to continue on the road of education and licensure.

I take an integrative approach to therapy, combining elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Existential theory, and Person-Centered practices, aiming to assist people in distancing themselves from damaging thoughts, messages, or beliefs that may have been internalized through societal messaging or past experiences. The goal is to help the individual reconnect with their own thoughts and beliefs to live a life informed by personal values and goals, and to determine for themselves what gives life meaning. I believe that the client is the expert in their own life; you are in the driver’s seat, and I’m just here to offer some additional support and a listening ear to make the journey a bit smoother. I hope to offer an environment that fosters understanding, empowerment, security, and self-discovery, because everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in themselves, their relationships, and the world around them.
