RESIDENT IN COUNSELING

Therapist

Hey! My name is Taylor Cheski. I received my Masters in Counselor Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Christopher Newport University. My personal philosophy of counseling is best expressed through empowering clients to create the lives they envision for themselves and using their values to guide their path. I act as a guide through this process and encourage self-reflection and exploration to identify values, strengths, and areas of growth. I will often use humor in my approach to emphasize the joy and laughter of the human experience.

I primarily work with adults ages 18 and up. I have experience working with college students, young adults, and those struggling with substance use concerns. In these populations I have worked with various concerns, including: Identity Development; Anxiety; Substance Use; Self-Esteem Building; Relationship Concerns; Trauma, and Grief/Loss. I also enjoy working with LGBTQ+ populations and approach all clients through a lens of cultural humility.

I use an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Person-Centered approach in counseling. These approaches rely heavily on showing empathy and compassion for clients, identifying values, and building a strong therapeutic alliance. I approach counseling with compassion, curiosity, and a deep respect for each person’s unique story. The work is all about building meaningful lives and relationships based on the clients needs and values. These lives are not perfect, but I see growth as being able to live with the imperfections and integrate them into the understanding of self--free of judgment, and full of authenticity.
